Due to it's rich history of migration, Grottes has always been a magnet for misfits. Today a mixture of restaurants, bars and art spaces dominate the local cultural landscape, offering unique spaces to meet, connect and exchange. In this sense Grottes is probably the most democratic of Geneva's neighbourhoods - an ideal to defend.
The cardboard citadel is a sort of monument to the values of the neighbourhood, working simultaneously as a symbolic local visual landmark, a temporary shelter, an act of ideological defence and a simple privacy screen, whilst physically offering a playful invitation to passers-by.
